Caring For Our Eyes

Scripture: John 9:13-41

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God cares about our problems.
  • Students will learn the vast majority of illness and disabilities from birth are not the result of the sin of the person who has them. They are the result of the curse placed an Adam and Eve that all mankind must die.
  • Students will learn nothing is impossible for God if it is within His will.
  • Students will learn how to take care of of their eyesight and why good eye care is important to overall health.

Guiding Question: Hows does eye care awareness create understanding of the importance of good healthcare?

Materials: Printed eye tests, markers, construction paper, pens, pencils

Procedure: Review the story of the Blind Man Healed from the scriptures above. Highlight that God cares for any problem we have and has the power to do the impossible when we feel powerless. Explain that we don’t know why the man was blind but that sometimes people can become blind by not taking good care of their eyes.

Ask the students if they have ever had their eyes checked at the eye doctor/taken a vision test before. Explain that these tests can check for color blindness, farsightedness, nearsightedness. (Explain these terms to students depending on age/background experiences). These tests can help you see if you need to go to the eye doctor.

After students are finished with the tests, have them make flyers to send to children in areas where there is not great healthcare. These fliers can have tips about how to take good care of their eyes. Tips can include: eating well, wearing sunglasses, avoid rubbing eyes (especially with dirty hands), try to keep a clean room/home to avoid dirt and dust in eyes. Distribute these flyers to local healthcare ministries or mission teams who can provide them to those they serve.

Additional Questions: How can information about good eye care be shared in the community?
Supplemental Activities: Research local newspapers and see if your students would be able to submit an article about the eye care tips they have learned.
