Praying With a Purpose

Scripture: Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God wants us to pray to him when we have problems.
  • Students will learn it is okay with God if we pray to Him about the same problem more than once.
  • Students will learn God wants us to have faith that He will do what is best for us.
  • Students will create ways to remember to pray for certain things in their lives.

Guiding Question: Why should we pray for different situations in our lives?

Materials: Anchor chart paper, slips of paper for each student, pencils, colored pencils, markers

Procedure: Review the story of the Blind Man Healed from the scriptures above. Emphasize that God wants us to come to Him and pray about anything. Even if we struggle with someone more than once, God still wants us to come to Him so He can help us and give us peace. When we feel different emotions, it can be easy to forget to pray to God and just get caught up in our emotions. Tell the students that it is important to remember to pray to God anytime you are upset, angry, sad, etc. because God always cares about your feelings and problems.

Have the students work together to come up with a way to use common emojis to remind them to pray for certain things. Give the students slips of papers to put their ideas on as you put each idea on an anchor chart. Examples: angry emoji – pray for help forgiving someone, happy emoji – thank God for a blessing, sad emoji – pray God heals someone that is ill, “angel” emoji – pray for the church, etc.

Additional Questions: How does practicing prayer help students remember to pray about their problems?
Supplemental Activity: Have each student make a list of a time in the past week that they felt sad, angry, happy, confused, and annoyed. Have the students take time to pray about each moment and talk to God about what made them feel that way. Encourage students to make note of things that bother them to help them remember to pray to God about it.
