Faith As A Mustard Seed

Scripture: Matthew 17:14-21, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:37-43

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God cares about our problems.
  • Students will learn God wants us to have complete faith in Him.
  • Students will learn nothing is impossible for God if it is in His will.
  • Students will learn how having faith can go along way.

Guiding Question: How can having faith in God lead to seeing His victories?

Materials: Cardstock, mustard seeds, pencils, markers, glue

Procedure: Review the story of A Boy Healed from the scriptures above. Emphasize that even just a little faith can lead to great things. The stronger our faith is in Jesus, the more we will see His victories and see Him do the “impossible” in our life if it is part of His plan. Tell the students that nothing is too big for God to overcome and He wants us to go to Him for everything and show Him that we have faith in Him.

Give each student a piece of cardstock, glue, and a mustard seed. Have the students glue the mustard seed in the middle and write the verses Matthew 17:20-21 on top of their paper. Tell the students that a mustard plant can grow to 6 ft or more. Have the students use found objects in the room  to create a mustard “tree” and them standing next to it to show the height perspective. Older students may want to compare how the mustard seed is used in this story to how it is used in Matthew 13:31-32. All students may choose to add to their drawings ways they can grow their faith like Bible reading, prayer, etc.

Additional Questions: How can spending time with God help our faith to grow?
Supplemental Activity: Have the students create a “faith plant”. The students can choose from a variety of seeds and plant the seed in a small cup to take home and help it grow. Remind students that every day, they should be taking care of their plant just like they should be taking care of their faith and helping it to grow. Encourage students to pray and/or read the Bible when they take care of their plant and even after that.
