Serving and Sharing

Scripture: Acts 18:1-28

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn sometimes people have only learned part of what God wants them to do.
  • Students will learn God wants us to help people learn everything God wants them to do and encourage them to do it.
  • Students will learn that sometimes if people refuse to hear what God wants them to hear our time may be better spent teaching others who will listen rather than spending all of our time with people who refuse to listen.
  • Students will complete a service project that honors those who serve in a vocational job.

Guiding Question: How does working a vocational job serve God and how can we honor those who work in vocational jobs?

Materials: Ingredients for treats of your choice

Procedure: Review the story of Aquila and Priscilla from the scriptures above. Explain how they served in a vocational ministry as they made and sold tents. Through their job, they also ministered to people and told them about God/how to be a Christian. Explain that today, vocational jobs are very important but often those who work in those jobs may find it hard to share their faith. Have several members of your congregation who work in vocational jobs share with the students what their job is and how they share their faith (jobs can include nurse, police, firefighter, doctor, teacher, office worker, lawyer, etc. and make sure members are asked ahead of time so they are able to prepare). Allow time for students to ask questions.

After members share, introduce the service project. Have the students make treats for those in the congregation who have vocational jobs where they serve others and share their faith. Explain that sometimes, these people do not always feel that their job is appreciated and this will encourage them to continue working hard and sharing their faith.

Additional Questions: How can students serve others and share their faith within their community?
Supplemental Activity: Have students research small acts of service or service projects that they could implement at school, a facility in their community, or at church.
