A Wise Donkey

Scripture: Numbers 22-24

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn that God expects everyone to obey Him.
  • Students will learn that God often goes out of His way to remind us to obey Him.
  • Students will learn it is wise to not add to or take away from what God has told us to say.
  • Students will participate in an activity to help them remember the story and its importance.

Guiding Question: What can we learn about obeying God from the story of Balaam?

Materials: cardstock, markers, pens

Procedure: Share the story of Balaam with the students. Have them write and preform a short play depicting the story. If there is extra time after the drama, discuss with the students the importance of obeying God. Ask them when it is tempting for them to disobey God. Consider having the student write John 14:15 “If you love me you will keep my commandments” at the top of a piece of cardstock. Have them illustrate it with the times when it is most important or the most difficult to remember to keep God’s commandments. Encourage them to memorize the verse and repeat it to themselves whenever they are tempted to disobey God. Consider putting the verse to music and having the students learn the song. (Many learn scriptures faster through song than straight memorization.)

Additional Question:

  • What other dramatic ways did God use in the Bible to remind us to obey Him?

Supplemental Activity: Have the advanced students find other times in the Bible when God used unusual and/or dramatic ways to remind us to obey Him.
