Describe the Scene

Scripture: John 9:13-41

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God cares about our problems.
  • Students will learn the vast majority of illness and disabilities from birth are not the result of the sin of the person who has them. They are the result of the curse placed on Adam and Eve that all mankind must die.
  • Students will learn nothing is impossible for God if it is within His will.
  • Students will learn how to use descriptive words.

Guiding Question: Have can students describe places?

Materials: None needed

Procedure: Review the story of the Blind Man Healed from the scriptures above. Emphasize that blind people struggled in Bible times because they could not see. There were not the many aids blind people have today to help them live life as everyone else. Explain that one way to help someone who is blind is to describe for them the things around them.

Introduce the activity. Have the students come up one at a time and describe a scene so someone who can’t see it will know what it is. The class has to use the description to try and figure out the scene. Use famous places (Statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon, Big Ben, The Egyptian Pyramids) and make as difficult as necessary (Example: Paris – can’t use words france or Eiffel tower, etc.)

Additional Questions: How can students describe objects?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students play “I Spy” within the classroom describing an object in the class. The others have to look for the object that matches the description. This can be done as a whole class or in partners.
