Culture Connections

Scripture: Acts 10:1-46, Acts 1:4-8

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn about the conversion of Cornelius.
  • Students will develop an understanding of what God wants us to do as Christians and fulfill His plan for us.
  • Students will learn how to listen for God’s direction in their lives.
  • Students will learn the importance of adapting to the culture in the country where they are ministering.

Guiding Question: How does adapting to a new culture make it easier to share God?

Materials: The materials will depend on the country chosen. Materials could include food, drink, currency, music, clothing, writing in another language, etc.

Procedure: Review Acts 1:4-8 with the students. Discuss with the students how missionaries often are in countries where they are unfamiliar with the culture. Ask the students why they think it is important for missionaries to respect and adapt to other cultures. How does it become easier to share the Gospel when missionaries relate to other cultures? Have students explore materials that represent another country’s culture. Ask the students how it is different than what they are used to in their culture and what challenges may come trying to adapt to that culture.

Additional Questions:

  • How could students adapt to different cultures in order to share God’s word?

Supplemental Activity: Let interested students each pick a country/culture to research. Have the students gather information about various aspects of the culture and share how they could effectively adapt in order to share God and what challenges they may encounter.
