God’s Blueprint For Our Lives

Scripture: Matthew 27:33-56, Mark 15:23-41, Luke 23:32-49, John 19:18-37

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn that a blueprint is needed to know how to build a building correctly and that God has a “blueprint” for our lives.
  • Students will learn that they have a choice to follow God’s plan.
  • Students will learn that not following God’s plan may lead to some difficulties later in life.
  • Students will learn that God has had a plan for everyone since the beginning of time and our role as Christians is to follow His plan.

Guiding Question: Why does God want us to follow His plan?

Materials: Example of a blueprint (if unable to have a blueprint, find a picture online), crayons, markers, large white paper

Procedure: Review the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. Ask students how Mary and the Apostles must have felt as they watch Jesus on the cross. Explain that sometimes in life, things seem very dark. It helps to remember God has a plan. He is in control, even when it may not seem like it.

Have the students gathered on the floor away from art materials. Show the students a blueprint and ask if they know what it is. Tell the students that blueprints are make by people who know how to build a building safely. It tells builders exactly how to build the building to look like what the other person wants. Explain that God has a blueprint for our life and part of His plan was to send Jesus to die for our sins so we could go to Heaven. God also has plan for the things He wants us to do in our lives and God gave us the choice to follow His plans or not.

Ask the students what they think would happen if a builder did not follow the blueprints. Just like the builder may end up with a mess, we could also end up with a mess if we choose not to follow God’s plan. God reveals some of His plans through various stories in the Bible. All of the stories in the Bible piece together like a puzzle to show God’s perfect plan.

Tell the students they are going to make pieces of art that will help them not only remember that the Bible holds the pieces to God’s plan, but also that God’s plans are for us personally. Give each students a large white piece of paper and draw the students’ silhouettes on their paper. Have the students decorate the inside of their silhouette with the basics of God’s plan (God created man, man sinned, Jesus died on cross, Jesus raised from the dead, baptism, heaven) and with their favorite Bible stories. An adult may draw the puzzle pieces inside their silhouette.

Additional Questions: How can the students recall when they have seen God’s plan in their lives so far?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students reflect and think about how God has worked things out. Let the students write a list and then reflect on what may have happened had they not followed God’s plan.
