Powerful Prayers

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn anything is possible if it is in God’s Plan.
  • Students will learn God often uses people the world would consider unlikely to do special things for Him, perhaps to help us remember the power is God’s, not man’s.
  • Students will learn it sometimes requires faith and bravery to do what God wants us to do.
  • Students will create prayer boxes to help them write their prayers and give their fears to God.

Guiding Question: How can students learn to turn to God when they are afraid?

Materials: Small tin boxes, small slips of blank paper, small pencils

Procedure: Review the story of David and Goliath. Explain that in the story, David’s plan seemed impossible yet because it was part of God’s bigger plan, it was made possible. Nobody thought David would be able to handle Goliath but David did not give up. David had great faith in God that God would work in what He was being called to do.  Emphasize how using a sling shot was a special talent that he would have developed protecting his sheep. God used this talent that He had developed in David to later defeat Goliath.

Introduce the activity. Explain that David trusted God with his fears unlike the soldiers. Explain that praying to God and letting Him handle our problems that make us afraid is that right path to take when experiencing fear. Give each student a small tin box and have them decorate it as a prayer box. Give the students small slips of paper and golf pencils inside to write the prayers and put them in a box to remind them God is in control – even when life seems scary.

Additional Support: How can students be reminded to pray daily?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students create a “prayer board”. Give each student a piece of cork board, tacks, and blank pieces of paper. Explain to the students that they can hang up the prayer board and put their prayers on the board. The board can go in a place at home where students will be continually reminded to pray.
