Formal and Informal Language

Scripture: 1 Samuel 20

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn about Jonathon and David’s friendship and loyalty.
  • Students will learn the importance of having godly friends.
  • Students will learn the difference between formal and informal conversations.

Guiding Question: How can students learn the difference between informal and formal language?

Materials: None needed

Procedure: Review the story of David and Jonathan. Review the importance of having loyal and godly friends and what those kind of friends look like in our lives. Talk to students about how conversations look different between friends than they may look with an adult.

Teach the students the differences between formal and casual conversations. Host a “party” where each student is assigned a role that would require some people to speak to them formally and others casually (like two business owners and the employee of one of them). They must converse with each other using the appropriate language.

Additional Questions: How can students demonstrate speaking formally and informally?

Supplemental Activity: Have students work in partners to make two videos. The first video is of the partners having a formal conversation and the second video is of the partners having informal conversations.
