Scripture: 1 Samuel 20
Learning Objectives:
- Students will review the loyal, godly friendship between David and Jonathan.
- Students will participate in donating and cleaning playground equipment to donate to local kids.
Guiding Question: How can we take used equipment and make it more usable so that it can be enjoyed by friends?
Materials: used playground equipment, cleaning brushes, sponges, soap, water, buckets
Procedure: Review the friendship between David and Jonathan focusing on their godliness and loyalty to one another. Have students discuss things that they like to do with friends. How can playing with friends help us learn to be better Christians? (Teamwork, sharing, cooperation, enjoying each other’s company). Students donate new and gently used playground equipment. Then everyone helps to wash and mend the used pieces. If time allows, take the equipment as a group to a park in an underserved area. Play with the community children there and let the community children take the toys and equipment home with them. Students can also donate to a local ministry. If possible find a host church and invite the kids to attend that church.
Additional Questions:
- How can we use our play time to encourage others to come to church and be better Christians?
- How should the way Christians play games be different and stand out? (Be fair, sportsmanship)
Supplemental Activity: Have students think of inventive ways to make toys using everyday items. This can be boxes, cans, etc. They can even make up their own games and rules using their invented toys. They can also make a new game using regular toys, but using them in a new way. Invite them to teach community children how to play the new games.
