Season to Season

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1-12

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn that in spite of his great wisdom, Solomon still made many bad choices.
  • Students will learn Solomon tried many things to find meaning in his life outside of God.
  • Students will learn after becoming miserable trying things other than God, Solomon realized true meaning and fulfillment in life can only be found through God.
  • Students will learn how the seasons develop on Earth.

Guiding Question: Why does putting other things before God limit happiness?

Materials: Ball decorated as a globe, dark room, flashlight, sharpie

Procedure: Explain to students that even though Solomon had asked God for wisdom, he didn’t always make good choices. In fact, it seems Solomon got caught up in a lot of the things his money and power gave him and maybe even stopped putting God first for a time in his life. Putting God first will allow us to find true joy and purpose for our lives on Earth. Putting other things before God and finding joy in Earthly things will only result in temporary satisfaction.

Introduce the activity. Bring in items representing the different seasons. Show the students how seasons are created. Find a ball that is decorated as a globe or use a regular dodge ball and draw a line around the middle. Place the ball in smaller container like a cup or small bowl so it can be tilted and held still simultaneously. Darken the room as needed and shine a flashlight at point slightly above the equator (center line). Explain that countries with the most light have summer, least light winter (may also need to review how the earth rotates so students can understand how seasons change).

Additional Questions: How can students illustrate how the seasons change?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students draw a model of how the Earth travels around the Sun and label when the different seasons occur.
