Mentoring

Scripture: I Kings 19:19-21, 2 Kings 1:1-2:18

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn sometimes God may ask us to leave everything we have and follow Him.
  • Students will learn it is important to learn from older, wiser godly people.
  • Students will learn eventually we have to become a teacher/mentor for others, pointing them to God.
  • Students will mentor younger students as they work with them in a service project.

Guiding Question: How can mentoring bring others to know more about God?

Materials: This will vary depending on the service project the students choose to do.

Procedure: Review the story of Elijah and Elisha with the students. Emphasize the importance of learning from older and wiser godly Christians as they will often have advice about situations you may be currently dealing with. They will also be eager to point you to God in every situation. Explain to the students that some people talk with other people who are called “mentors”. Mentors are people who are older and you meet with to talk and get advice. Tell the students that they can serve as mentors to the students that are younger than them.

Introduce the service project. Tell the students that they are going to invite younger students in the congregation to work on a service project with them. They will work with the younger students to create and implement a service project that meets a need in the congregation and/or the community. During the project, they will set aside time to talk with the younger students about what questions they might have about God or to talk about anything hard they are dealing with. Remind the students to always back up their advice with scripture and what they have learned from the Bible.

Additional Questions: How does having a mentor help you grow your faith?

Supplemental Activity: Have adults in your congregation volunteer to help with a service project that the students create. During the service project, have the adults talk with the students offering advice on situations the students have going on and how to continue growing in their faith.
