Scripture: Exodus 13-16

Guiding Question: Why does God not always provide our wants?
Materials: Paper, pencil
Procedure: Review the story of the Escape from Egypt from the scripture above. Discuss with students how God was able to provide for the needs of the people as they fled Egypt. Explain that there is a difference between wants and needs and that sometimes our “wants” may not align with God’s plan for us. We must learn that God works out all for the best and sometimes our “wants” are not for the best. He loves us and will always provide our needs so that we can continue growing and serving his Kingdom.
Introduce the activity. Remind students that there was a large number of people and belongings in Egypt. Tell the students they are going to practice multiplication using the story of the Escape from Egypt to help them. Take numbers from story and multiply. You can use other possible large number multiplying problems. For example: x thousands of people times with x number of pieces of luggage each = How many total pieces of luggage?
Additional Questions: How can students show their understanding of multiplication in word problems?
Supplemental Activity: Have students create multiplication word problems based on the story for their classmates to solve.
