Traveling Through the Bible

Scripture: Exodus 13-16

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God will provide what we need.
  • Students will learn God does not always give us what we want.
  • Students will learn God wants us to appreciate the gifts He has given us.
  • Students will learn how to use maps and locate major places in the Bible.

Guiding Question: How can students learn to find different locations mentioned in the Bible on a map?

Materials: Various maps from places around the world, some of which include major locations in the Bible, paper, pencils

Procedure: Review the story of the Israelites escaping Egypt focusing on how God provided for their needs. Explain that to live you need food/water, shelter/safety and love. God provided for the Israelites and he provides for us too. God will always provide for our needs but we still have to do our part to take care of ourselves and have a plan for how to provide for ourselves in difficult times. God wants us to be smart and plan ahead so that we can help others and ourselves.

Introduce the activity. Pull out various maps and show the students where they live and then maps of the Bible lands pointing out places like Egypt, Canaan, etc. See if the students can find locations mentioned in other Bible stories. Have the students create and label maps they can use at home to better understand the places they are reading about in the Bible.

Additional Questions: How can students use a map to plan trips?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students create a travel map and itinerary to visit places mentioned in the Bible.
