Feeding For Jesus

Scripture: Matthew 15:32-39, Mark 8:1-10

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God cares about our needs.
  • Students will learn God provides what we need (but not necessarily what we want).
  • Students will learn nothing is impossible for God if it is within His will.
  • Students will participate in a service project where they put together nutritional meals to provide for those in need.

Guiding Question: How does serving others who are hungry reflect Jesus?

Materials: The materials will vary depending on the food needs from the organization of your choosing.

Procedure: Review the story of the 4000 Fed from the scriptures above. Explain that even though it seemed impossible to feed everyone, Jesus performed a miracle because He cared about those people, wanted to meet their needs, and lead them to wanting to know more about Him. He made the impossible possible because it was part of His plan and He can do the same in our lives. God cares about every need we have and wants to provide for us. As Christians, God wants us to be able to help others in need in the best ways we can.

Introduce the service project. Tell the students they are going to work with a local group/mission team (your choice of who to partner with) to help provide nutritional meals to those that are hungry. This will help meet the need of being hungry, meet the need of good nutrition, and reflect the way that God cares for others. Have the students help mix, package, and prepare the food for those in need. (The food/ingredients will vary depending on the organization’s needs). The students can go with you to deliver the food packages to the organization if they are able to.

Additional Questions: How can the hungry be served in the local community?
Supplemental Activity: Set up a time with a local food bank or church pantry to volunteer. Take the students with you to volunteer and bring food donations if needed.
