Follow the Directions

Scripture: Genesis 12, 15 and 20

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Abram.
  • Students will learn who important it was for Abram to follow God’s directions.
  • Students will participate in an activity allowing them to practice reading and following directions.

Guiding Question: How can you use written directions to create something?

Materials: printed copy of directions (one for each student), sheet of blank paper for each student

Procedure: Review the story of Abram, focusing especially on how God gave Abram directions to follow to find his new home. Give the students the written instructions to build a paper airplane with no diagrams. Have them follow the instructions and use the blank sheet of paper to create an object. Compare the finished product to the drawing of the finished airplane. How close did the students come to the airplane they were supposed to create? What problems did they have in following directions? What makes following instructions difficult or easy? How hard is it for us to follow God’s instructions for our lives?

Additional Question: What are some of the instructions God gives us in the Bible?

Supplemental Activity: Have more advanced students research instructions God gives us in the Bible. Have them share their findings and lead a discussion on how easy or difficult the various instructions God gives are to follow accurately and consistently.
