Scripture: Exodus 1-2
Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn God has a plan, but sometimes bad things still happen.
- Students will learn God is working even when bad things happen.
- Students will learn sometimes things in our lives don’t make sense, because we are only one piece of a much larger plan of God’s.
- Students will create skits about how to take care of their family.
Guiding Question: Why does God want us to care for our loved ones?
Materials: Anchor chart paper, markers, props for skits
Procedure: Review the story of Moses from the scripture above. Remind that students that Miriam the sister of Moses helped Moses by watching him and then offering to go get her mom to help pharaoh’s daughter take care of Moses. We should help take care of the members of our family. Have students share why God thinks it is important to take care of our families. Have students share and explain various ways you can care for your family/give personal examples if appropriate.
Introduce the activity. Have students break into small groups and create skits showing ways family members can help take care of each other. For younger students you may need to provide scenarios they can then act out. Have students take the ideas from the skits and create a miniature anchor chart with the ideas they can take home. Encourage them to focus on being more helpful and taking better care of family members.
Additional Questions: How can students provide acts of service for loved ones?
Supplemental Activity: Have students decide on one way they can all support their family (helping with chores, making a meal for them, etc). Once decided, teach students practical tips to help them support their family (example: how to properly clean countertops, wipe down mirrors, cook in a oven, etc)
