Guiding Question: How are events in our lives connected to God’s plan?

Materials: Scale, objects in classroom, paper, pencil

Procedure: Review the story of Moses. Discuss Egypt in the time of Moses including how pharaohs were viewed as gods and the Israelites were slaves. Explain that Moses’ birth and life as a child was a very important event. His life story may not have made sense but was part of a big plan God had for him and others. In our lives, we often do not understand things that happen or people that are placed in our lives. We must remember that God is working a much larger plan that is in our best interest, even if bad things do happen.

Introduce the activity. Ask students if they think Moses in the baby basket was light or heavy and why they think so. How many pounds do they think he was? Explain that when weighing an object, it can be weighed in pounds or ounces. Explain the conversion between the two and model a few examples. Have students practice weighing objects from the classroom on a scale and convert between oz to lbs and lbs to oz.

Additional Questions: How can converting weights be used in real life?

Supplemental Activity: Have students research the weights of important artifacts from Bible times and convert the weight from lbs to oz or oz to lbs.
