Build, Measure, Convert

Scripture: Joshua 5-6

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn that God expects us to obey Him, even if we don’t understand why he is asking us to do something.
  • Students will learn God can make the impossible happen if it is in His will.
  • Students will learn God keeps His promises.
  • Students will learn how to find the area and perimeter of a shape.

Guiding Question: Why does God want us to trust His Word?

Materials: Device to play video from, building blocks, paper, pencils

Procedure: Review the story of Jericho focusing on how the Israelites had to trust God even though they did not understand why they had to march around the wall. This happens with us today. God’s Word might instruct you to do things that you do not want to do and you do not understand why you have to do it, but we must trust that God knows best. In the end it will be good.

Review area and perimeter. Great resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSVMrPu0__U Draw several examples on the board and have the class solve with you to find the area and perimeter. Tell the students they are going to practice finding the area and perimeter of larger surfaces such as walls, bookcases, etc. The students will need to convert answers to feet and yards when needed (Example: 15 inches equals one foot and 3 inches). Allow students to measure larger objects in the room or in other rooms. Students can work independently or with a partner. Come back and share at the end.

Additional Questions: How can students show their understanding of area and perimeter?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students create area and perimeter word problems with a drawing if needed. Then the students can have their friends solve the problems, using conversion if needed.
