Fact Check

Scripture: 1 Kings 13-14

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God expects complete obedience from us.
  • Students will learn God sometimes gives us earthly consequences when we disobey Him.
  • Students will learn, just like Jeroboam, sometimes when people begin disobeying God, they continue to move farther and farther away from Him over time.
  • Students will learn how to use features of the Bible to look up what they are told about God and check to make sure it aligns with the Bible.

Guiding Question: Why does understanding how to use the Bible help us know what is right and wrong?

Materials: Bibles (enough for each student), Bible study aids (found online), Bible dictionaries, blank bookmarks, stickers, markers, crayons

Procedure: Review the story of Jeroboam from the scriptures above. Emphasize that some people will lie like the man did to the prophet and say “God says” or the “Bible Says” to make us think they are telling the truth. We need to know what the Bible says and check everything people (even preachers and teachers) tell us by what the Bible actually says. Explain that there are features of the Bible and places online that can help us explore the Bible and check to make sure what we are being told/taught is accurate.

Teach the students how to use a Bible dictionary, concordance and other study aids to double check what they are told by the Bible. Give the students time to explore each of these aids and practice looking up different facts in the Bible. Then have them make Bible bookmarks with a verse about the Bible being good for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.) Have students decorate it to remind them to read their Bibles daily to keep from being mislead by someone.

Additional Questions: How does reading the Bible lead to more wisdom about what God wants us to know to live a good Christian life?
Supplemental Activity: Have the students pick a book of the Bible that they would like to read. The students will then create a plan for the following week of how many chapters they are going to read each day/how they plan to organize what they have learned. During the next class, have students share what wisdom they learned from their reading and what it helped them understand.
