Alphabetical Order

Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 1:14-20, Luke 5:1-11 and 27-32 and John 1:35-51

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Jesus has called all people to be his disciples.
  • Students will learn the Apostles were specially chosen disciples who learned at the side of Jesus.
  • Students will learn being a disciple of Jesus may mean giving up some earthly things, serving others, sharing our faith, obeying and worshipping God and taking advantage of the opportunities God gives us in life to serve Him. In some cases, it can also mean persecution, imprisonment and even death.
  • Students will learn how to alphabetize words.

Guiding Question: How can students learn to put words in alphabetical order?

Materials: Bibles, pencils, paper

Procedure: Review the stories of Jesus calling the Apostles, focusing especially on Andrew bringing Peter to Jesus. Explain to the students it is important that they act like Andrew and invite their friends and relatives to learn about Jesus. Brainstorm with students the different ways to invite people to learn about Jesus. Explain that sometimes we have to give up some parts of our lifestyle or comfortability to go and serve those God has called us to.

Introduce the skill of alphabetizing words and names. As a class, alphabetize the names of the apostles. Have students alphabetize lists of other things found in the Bible, such as cities mentioned in the Gospels.

Additional Questions: How can students work together to alphabetize words?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students work in pairs. Each partner picks words in a certain section of the Bible and writes them down un-alphabetized. The other partner has to put them in alphabetical order. Students in the pair will check each other when they are finished.
