Watch It Grow!

Scripture: Mark 4:21-32, Luke 8:16-32, Matthew 13:31-32

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Jesus told parables to help people understand godly principles.
  • Students will learn parables contain important lessons God wants us to remember and follow.
  • Students will learn God wants us to have faith and tell others about God.
  • Students will complete an experiment where they learn how to grow a pepper from a seed.

Guiding Question: Why is it important to follow God’s instructions for our lives?

Materials: apples, peppers, cucumbers, styrofoam cup, soil, water, instructions for growing a pepper

Procedure: Review the story of the Parables of the Lamp, Seed, and Mustard Seed. Discuss what we need to do in order to grow with Jesus and in our relationship with him. Explain the different ways to grow in our faith (reading the Bible, praying, serving God, etc). Ask students what they are doing in their lives and what they could even do better to help grow in their faith.

Have students remove seeds from apples, peppers, cucumbers. Have students compare the seeds to each other and guess how long it would take to grow each plant. Have students plant the pepper seeds in cups of dirt. Make sure students spread out the pepper seeds on the dirt so they are able to grow. Let students take the dirt home and track the growth progress of the plant. Send students home with instructions for how to grow the peppers.

Additional Questions: Why is it important to have all the components of growing our faith in order to grow with God?
Supplemental Activity: Have students research and create an experiment where they will grow a type of plant (their choice). Remind them that they have to make sure they have all the right components in order for the experiment to be a success. (Bring back to needing to have all the right components of living out our faith to grow with God).
