Ministering to the Sick

Scripture: Acts 3:1-4:31, Acts 5:12-16

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Peter and John going before the Sanhedrin.
  • Students will learn that Christian are sometimes persecuted for their beliefs.
  • Students will learn that they need to share their faith even when it is difficult.
  • Students will learn how to help the sick through showing them God’s love and collect pop-tops to help children and families in the Ronald McDonald House.

Guiding Question: How can God’s love be shared with those who are sick?

Materials: Large Ziploc bags, large labels, pop-tops, markers, construction paper or printer paper

Procedure: Review the story of Peter and John before the Sanhedrin and how they helped the sick. Tell the students the story from Acts 5:12-16 where the Apostles healed people and those people became Christians. Discuss with the students how healing people might help them decide to be Christians. Help students understand that when you are really sick, it is hard to think about other things and sometimes you are scared and sad. Discuss how this is a good time to help people and how that shows them how much God loves them. This could lead to those people and their families wanting to learn more about God and become Christians.

Explain to the students how we no longer have miraculous gifts but that we can still help sick people. Provide examples of how we can help those who are sick (cards, food, flowers, etc) Introduce the Ronald McDonald House and its purpose to the students. Have the students make get well cards that can be sent to sick people and create collection bags for pop-tops for the Ronald McDonald House. The pop-tops will be collected over a chosen period of time and students who brought back pop-tops wil get to go to the Ronald McDonald House to deliver them.

Additional Questions:

  • How can students meet the needs of sick members within the church congregation?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students work together to make cards, food, gather flowers (or whatever best meets the needs of those who are sick) for those who are sick within the congregation.
