Serving and Sewing

Scripture: Acts 9:32-43

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Peter used miraculous healing to draw people to God.
  • Students will learn God loves for us to serve others and share our faith.
  • Students will learn God cares about our problems.
  • Students will participate in a service project that provides clothing to those in need.

Guiding Question: How can students serve others while sharing their faith?

Materials: Sewing kits, donated clothing, buttons

Procedure: Review the story of Peter healing from the scriptures above. Explain that the healing was not only a way to serve others but also bring people to God. Through serving, others can learn that God cares about them and their problems. Ask the students how they would feel if someone gave them something they really needed and also told them about God and His love.

Introduce the service project. Ask the students to bring in gently used clothing that they are going to donate to ministries who serve the needy by providing them with clothing. When students bring in the used clothing, teach the students how to sew by teaching them how to sew buttons on clothing. Teach the students to make any repairs needed before donating the clothing. (This project may last several weeks depending on how long you want students to collect clothing.)

Additional Questions: How can students share their faith through serving the hungry?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students create a service project that meets the needs of the hungry in their community. Have the students partner with the church or local ministries that serve the hungry.
