Scripture: Genesis 3-4
Learning Objectives:
- Students will review the story of the first sins, focusing especially on mentions of gardens
- Students will learn/review the concept of how to find the perimeter of a square or rectangle
- Students will participate in an activity to practice finding the perimeter of various sized squares and rectangles
Guiding Question: How can we find the perimeter of a garden plot or any other square or rectangle?
Materials: tape measures, rulers, square and rectangular pots of various sizes
Procedure: Review the story of the first sins, focusing especially on the mentions of gardens and growing food. Discuss how after Adam and Eve no longer lived in the Garden of Eden, they had to plant their own garden. Teach/review how to find the perimeter of a square or a rectangle (add the lengths of the sides or for a square 4 x length of one side, or a rectangle 2 x short side + 2 x long side). If possible using the tape measures go outside and find the perimeter of a garden or flower border as a class. Show the students the various square and rectangular pots you have gathered (make sure each is numbered somehow). Have students work in pairs to find and record the perimeter of every pot. Check answers as a class. Discuss any issues the students had with the assignment.
Additional Question: How can we find the perimeter of a circular pot? (Note:Pi times diameter or 3.14 times a line going from one side of the pot to the other through a point in the center of the pot)
Supplemental Activity: Have students repeat the activity, but this time finding the perimeter of various sized circular pots.
