Obedience Game

Scripture: Genesis 3-4

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the details of the Fall and the story of Cain and Abel
  • Students will learn the Fall was a result of Adam and Eve disobeying God
  • Students will learn everyone (except Jesus) disobeys God, which is called sinning
  • Students will participate in an activity which teaches them the importance of obedience

Guiding Question: Why is it important to be obedient?

Materials: paper, pencils, pictures or photos (one for each child)

Procedure: Review the details of the story of the Fall and Cain’s murder of Abel. Discuss with the students what it means to disobey. Introduce the concepts of partial obedience, ignoring instructions and disobeying the spirit of the law as forms of disobedience. Have students divide into pairs. Place a picture or photo face down in front of one person in each pair. Give the other person in the pair, a piece of paper and a pencil. At your signal, the person with the photo turns it over so only he/she can see it. He must then describe what he sees in terms of lines, directions, etc. He may not use words like pig, eyes, tree, etc. His partner should draw what he describes to him, the best he possibly can. Once they are finished, compare the drawing created to the original that was being described. Hand out new photos or pictures and have the partners switch roles. After the activity, discuss the results as a group. Who was the best at obeying instructions? How important would this have been if it had been a map to get you home from where you were lost without food or shelter? What if it were God giving you a map to a godly life?

Additional Question: Using the New Testament as your guide, what is the “picture” God wants you to obey for your life?

Supplemental Activity: Have students use the New Testament to create a “picture” of how God would like them to live their lives. Students can write a poem or essay or create a work of art using words and photos cut from magazines to illustrate what they learned.
