Watching for Weeds


Scripture: Matthew 13:24-43

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Jesus told parables to help people understand godly principles.
  • Students will learn parables have important lessons God wants us to learn and follow.
  • Students will learn those who follow God will spend eternity in Heaven.
  • Students will learn about how to prevent weeds in garden and share information with community gardens that provide food for the hungry.

Guiding Question: How can weeds be pesky and useful both in our personal life and in gardening?

Materials: Notes from research, pictures/examples of weeds

Procedure: Review the Parable of the Weeds from the scriptures above. Explain the importance of following God so that we can go to Heaven and also influence others and help them follow God. Discuss that sometimes there our weeds in our life that we need to get rid of and that we can also learn from. Explain how this is similar to weeds in a garden. Weeds in a garden can be pesky and need to go away but are also beneficial to learn about.

Introduce the service project. Have the students research how to prevent weeds from growing, weed identification, and possible uses for weeds. Once the students have gathered information and have pictures of weeds to use for examples, reach out to community gardens and ask if the students can share their information with them. Take the students with you to share their findings to help the community gardens better improve their gardens.

Additional Questions: How can students practice weed prevention in their community?

Supplemental Activity: Take students with you to a local park or recreation area to help clean up weeds and the environment.
