Scripture: Joshua 10-11,18
Learning Objectives:
- Students will review how God controlled the sky and weather when the Israelites won a victory over the Amorites.
- Students will learn English vocabulary associated with the sky and weather.
- Students will create a picture and learn how to label it to demonstrate their weather and sky related vocabulary.
Guiding Question: What English words are associated with the sky and weather?
Materials: paper, markers/crayons/colored pencils, sequins, glitter, cotton, blue or white construction paper, clear/white/blue beads, liquid glue
Procedure: Review the story of when God caused the sun to stand still and controlled the weather so that Israel could win the battle over the Amorites. Give each student a piece of paper and tell them that this will be their background for the sky. Have them fold the paper in half. One half is the night sky and the other is the daytime sky. Hail can be represented by blue, white, or clear beads. Glitter or sequins can be used for stars and the moon. (Glitter glue is less messy.) Cotton can be used for clouds. Students can draw rain and snowflakes.
Have students label their picture with English words: sky, sun, moon, stars, hail, rain, clouds, snow. Explain the function of a label and how it is used in graphics and pictures.
Additional Questions:
- What are some other English words for things that you see in the sky?
Supplemental Activity: Students can give a weather report in English. To be more accurate and practice using weather resources, have them research the week’s forecast. They can use this to prepare a report for their peers. Students can draw maps and models as visual aids.
