The King of All Kings

Scripture: Matthew 21:1-17, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:29-44, John 12:12-19

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Jesus fulfilled many prophecies in the Old Testament about the Messiah.
  • Students will learn Jesus is the King of all Kings.
  • Students will learn many people recognized Jesus as the Messiah even before he died and was resurrected.
  • Students will participate in a pretend Triumphant Entry and learn about how the crowd felt throughout the entry.

Guiding Question: How did the Triumphant Entry help people to believe that Jesus was King?

Materials: Donkey (look into petting zoos, non-profits, etc), palm fronds (handmake if needed)

Procedure: Share the story of the Triumphant Entry from the scriptures above. Explain that this entry was a way that Jesus fulfilled a prophecy made about Him in the Old Testament. A prophecy tells about something that will happen in the future and Jesus fulfilled many during His time on Earth. Tell the students that this was a grand entry that honored Jesus and helped many people to learn and believe that Jesus truly was King of all Kings. The people saw Him as the Messiah and sadly much later on near the time of Jesus death, these people turned against Him.

Take the students outside to where you will have set up an area to hold their own triumphant entry. Show the students the donkey and remind the students that Jesus rode in on a donkey. Then show the students the palm fronds and remind them that the people in the crowd waved these up and down as Jesus walked by. Give each student a chance to ride on the donkey as the others wave the palm fronds shouting praise. After all the students have had a turn, discuss what they think everyone must have been feeling and why it was important for us to know the people realized at this point who Jesus was.

Additional Questions: Who is your perfect King? What does he mean to you?
Supplemental Activity: After reading the story, have the students draw a picture and give a description of the “perfect” King. When the students are done, have them share how they would feel if this perfect King was coming into their city. How would they react? Compare this to how the people in the crowd reacted when Jesus came and remind students that Jesus is our one perfect King.
