Scripture: Judges 1-3
Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn God provided leaders called judges for the Israelites before they had kings.
- Students will learn the judges had a military role and sometimes a spiritual one as well. They probably did not judge court cases.
- Students will learn when parents and leaders do not teach children to follow God, they grow up and don’t follow God. They begin to make ungodly choices which bring earthly and eternal consequences.
Interesting Facts:
- Baal was a false god popular in Old Testament times. He was the god of fertility and was pictured in a thunderstorm. God sending droughts was a way to show God was the true god and Baal could not “overrule” or defeat Him.
- We don’t know for sure who wrote the book of Judges. The Jewish writings in the Talmud give the prophet Samuel credit for writing down the book of Judges.
- It is difficult to date all of the events in the book of Judges. We do know they happened between the death of Joshua and ends sometime before the birth of Samuel. It is thought a period of about 300 years is covered within the book of Judges.
