When Students Miss Bible Class

When Students Miss Bible Class - Teach One Reach OneDid everyone on your roll attend your last class? Do you even know the name of every child who should be in your class? What do you do when a student misses? Or only attends about once a month? Or never even comes to class at all?

It’s very easy as a volunteer teacher to assume student follow up is the job of the minister or program director. After all, you are volunteering quite a bit of your time just to prepare and teach the kids who do attend.

I want to encourage you though to really appreciate the influence you can have on your students for God. If your students know you truly love them and care about them, they will be much more open to hearing what you have to share with them about God and how He wants them to live their lives.

It doesn’t have to be fancy or take a lot of time. You can get inexpensive cards at box retailers. Everyone likes a card, but especially young children. You can even go the postcard route if you want to save money. Older kids and teens would probably appreciate a text or a private message on Facebook. Although some may appreciate phone calls, many young people feel uncomfortable talking on the phone – feel free to leave a heartfelt message though if you decide to call.

It doesn’t matter how you to decide to communicate to students who miss your class, it’s just important that you do. Don’t worry if they appear to be nonchalant about your contact with a response like “Oh we were just out of town.” It is still making an impression – maybe you do indeed care about whether or not they attend class.

Often, it’s the little things that make a teacher more effective. Reaching out to your absent students is one little thing that can make a big difference!
