Ministry to Witch Doctors

Scripture: I Samuel 28

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn it is wrong to use witchcraft as it gives power to someone other than God.
  • Students will learn Saul had stopped trusting in God and was desperate for anyone to tell him what he wanted to hear.
  • Students will learn God’s will does happen eventually, even if we don’t like it.
  • Students will learn how Christians are ministering to witch doctors.

Guiding Question: How can students understand the importance of ministering to witch doctors?

Materials: Internet access to show videos of Bob Goff and ministry serving witch doctors

Procedure:

*This activity is for older students due to some disturbing realities they will learn

Review the story of King Saul and the Witch of Endor, being careful not to make it sound too scary. Explain that the fact that she could call up Samuel seemed to surprise even the “witch”. Tell students that today many people have carefully watched people who pretend to talk to dead people and/or tell the future and have realized that they use tricks and not real magic. Explain that sadly there are still witches in our world today. In some countries witch doctors are very popular. In Uganda, these witch doctors kidnap, mutilate and kill children as part of their spells. You can find short videos online featuring Bob Goff and his ministry to these witch doctors. He tries to teach them about Jesus, but is helping the Ugandan government find and jail those witch doctors who refuse to stop. Help your students think of ways to encourage those ministering to witch doctors and teaching them how God wants them to live their lives (thereby saving many children in the process.)

Additional Questions: How can students encourage those who witness to witch doctors?

Supplemental Activity: Have students create cards of encouragement to send to Bob Goff and his ministry (or other ministries you know that serve witch doctors).
