Dodging Distractions

Scripture: Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God wants us to put Him first.
  • Students will learn Jesus did not want people to ignore the poor, he was merely pointing out Mary understood why Jesus was on earth and was honoring him.
  • Students will learn Jesus wants us to share our faith and he told the disciples the woman’s story would be shared to honor her for what she did.
  • Students will create items that can be used to help start discussions about Jesus and faith.

Guiding Question: How can serving others lead to opportunities to share our faith?

Materials: Cards, markers, pencils, colored pencils, crayons

Procedure: Review the story of the Woman Anoints Jesus from the scriptures above. Emphasize that God always wants us to put Him first so we can know best how to serve Him and others all for His Kingdom. Remind students that they should remember to not get so distracted serving others that they forget the importance of God and sharing your faith. Serving others is a great opportunity to also share Jesus with them and tell them about your faith.

Have students design cards that can be used to start discussions with others. These cards can be given to those in your congregation or given to those living in neighborhoods close to the church. Tell the students that creating and giving these cards to others is a good way to practice sharing their faith while serving them with encouragement. For those in your church, the students can make cards encouraging them to keep Jesus first, always have their hope in Him, and keep making godly choices. For those in close neighborhoods, have the students create cards that invite them to church, share about Jesus, and share why their faith is important to them.

Additional Questions: How can we be prepared to share our faith with others when we least expect it?
Supplemental Activity: Have each student write down a time in their life when Jesus has been faithful to them, helped them through a struggle, etc. When each student has something, have the students pair up and share their moment with the other person as if they were sharing it with someone who did not know Jesus. When all the students are done sharing, explain how practicing telling others about these moments can help them be better prepared to share their faith.
