Time Passes Game

Scripture: Genesis 1-2

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Creation, paying special attention to units of time
  • Students will learn/review the various units of time
  • Students will learn how many units of time it takes to create a different unit of time
  • Students will play a game to help them remember how the various units of time are related to each other

Guiding Question: What are the various types of time and how are they related?

Materials: Time words written in bright colors – one word per sheet of paper. Multiple sets will be necessary for large groups of students. Laminating or placing the sheets in some sort of plastic will increase the longevity of these game cards.

Procedure: Review the Creation story focusing on the time elements in the story. Teach and/or review the basic elements of time (second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, etc.) and how they relate to one another (60 seconds in a minute, etc.). Place the cards on the grown randomly over a large open space. Call out various time statements (EX: There are 24 hours in every?). Students should quickly run to one of the game cards with the correct answer. Make the questions come more quickly or increase the difficulty of the statements to make the game more challenging.

Additional Questions:

  • What types of time are mentioned in the Creation story?
  • What types of time do you remember from other Bible stories?

Supplemental Activity: Create sets of game cards on index cards. Divide students into pairs. Have students take turns creating time questions and pulling out the card with the correct answer.
