David and Jonathan

Scripture: I Samuel 20

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn it is important to pick godly and loyal friends.
  • Students will learn Jonathan was willing to do what God wanted Him to do, even though it meant keeping his father from executing his plans.
  • Students will learn David later kept his promise to Jonathan, because loyal friends keep their promises.

Interesting Facts:

  • Jonathan knew God had chosen David as the next king. In those days it would have been common for David to kill everyone related to Saul when he took the throne. Promising to spare Jonathan’s descendants showed the amount of love and trust the two men had for each other.
  • Many years later, David kept his promise to Jonathan and made Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth a member of his household.
