God Gives the Israelites Laws

Scripture: Leviticus 1-27

Please Note: Do not feel obligated to cover every law given to Moses. You may want to cover the Ten Commandments again, the concept of offerings covered in chapters 1-7, the idea of dietary laws in chapter 11, the holidays covered in chapters 16, 23 and 25, and various interesting laws like those found in chapters 13,17,19 and 25-27.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God gave the Israelites many laws.
  • Students will learn the Law God gave Moses contain laws not just for religion, but laws that would be the rules for their society as well.
  • Students will learn it was impossible for the people to keep all of these laws, so God already had a plan for Jesus to come to earth and die for our sins.

Interesting Facts:

  • The laws God gave Moses can be found in the later part of Exodus, the book of Leviticus and even in parts of Numbers and Deuteronomy.
  • Over the years, the priests and rabbis added their own laws to those given by God. They made the people believe these man-made laws were as important as the ones given by God. This created a tremendous burden on the people and is what Jesus often criticized the Jewish rulers for while he was here on earth.
