  • Students will participate in an activity to reinforce the concept that lying has consequences.

Guiding Question: What are some of the consequences that happen when we lie?

Materials: scenario cards

Procedure: Review the story of Abram, focusing especially on the times Abram lied to others about his relationship with Sarai. As students to name all of the consequences that happened because of Abram’s lies. Remind students our lies often have consequences too. Sometimes we experience the consequences immediately and sometimes we don’t realize the consequences until later.

Divide the students into teams. Give each team the same scenario where someone tells a lie. Set a timer for three minutes. During that time, each team should write down every possible consequence that could happen from that one lie.

When time is called, have each team share their list. Keep giving teams new scenarios which could create different consequences. After playing several rounds have the students discuss all of the consequences. Are there some that happen almost every time someone lies? Are there some that are delayed and may happen some time after the lie is told?

Additional Question: What other sins have earthly consequences?

Supplemental Activity: Have more advanced students research what other sins may have earthly consequences. Have students share their findings and discuss why we can still experience earthly consequences for our sins even after God has forgiven us.
