Talking About Traveling

Scripture: Genesis 27-28

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Jacob’s blessing and dream, focusing on the idea Jacob was traveling when he had the dream.
  • Students will learn Jacob had to rest for the night because he could not complete his trip in one day.
  • Students will learn that unlike Jacob, travelers today can often stay in hotels when they can’t finish their journeys in one day.
  • Students will learn/review words commonly used in hotels.
  • Students will participate in an activity to help them practice using travel words.

Guiding Question: What words do we need to know to use in a hotel when traveling?

Materials: No materials are required, however adding costumes and props can make the activity more fun. You may also want to create character and scenario cards for each student.

Procedure: Review the story of Jacob focusing on the idea Jacob was traveling when he had the dream. Explain that although there were no hotels like there are today, Jacob still had to find a place to rest for the night. Teach/review words students might need to use if they were staying in a hotel. Have students play different roles from guest, to desk clerk, to maintenance, housekeeping ,etc. If you have enough students, consider “adding” a restaurant to your hotel for opportunities to practice food and restaurant words as well. If time allows, you may want students to switch roles in order to practice additional words.

Additional Questions:

  • What other businesses would a traveler use and what additional vocabulary words would you need to master to use them?

Supplemental Activity: Have more advanced students think of other businesses travelers may use. Encourage them to create vocabulary lists for additional words needed to use those businesses. Repeat the activity using the businesses and vocabulary words the students found.
