Scripture: Luke 2

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of boy Jesus a the temple.
  • Students will learn that Jesus knew the scriptures well as a boy.
  • Students will learn that it is very important that they read the Bible and learn the scriptures.
  • Students will participate in an activity to encourage them to read and study their Bibles regularly.

Guiding Question: How can we learn the scriptures so we know what God wants us to do?

Materials: folder, notebook paper, markers and stickers

Procedure: Review the story of boy Jesus at the temple, focusing especially on how well Jesus knew the scriptures. Tell the students that the scriptures in the time of Jesus would have been our Old Testament. (The New Testament was written after Jesus returned to heaven.) Explain that the boys attended school at their local synagogue. All of their subjects were taught using the scriptures. Explain that even though school is different today it is still very important that they study the bible. It will help them know what God wants them to do. Tell students that the best way to remember to study their bibles is to make a bible corner in their room. They can put a comfortable blanket, pillow, the snack plate (they made in the activity for this lesson), their bible and the bible study\prayer journal they will make today. Give students folders, notebook paper and other materials. Have them create and decorate a bible study\prayer journal. Encourage them to record prayer requests, how God answers them, favorite verses and questions they have about what they read, etc.

Additional Questions:

  • What can you do to remember to study your bible regularly?

Supplemental Activity: Have students interview older Christians. Encourage students to ask them why they study their bibles regularly, how it helps them and how they remember to read the bible regularly.
