Jesus Calls the Apostles

Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 1:14-20, Luke 5:1-11 and 27-32 and John 1:35-51

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn Jesus has called all people to be his disciples.
  • Students will learn the Apostles were specially chosen disciples who learned at the side of Jesus.
  • Students will learn being a disciple of Jesus may mean giving up some earthly things, serving others, sharing our faith, obeying and worshipping God and taking advantage of the opportunities God gives us in life to serve Him. In some cases, it can also mean persecution, imprisonment and even death.

Interesting Facts:

  • Andrew and one other Apostle/disciple (unnamed) of Jesus were originally disciples of John the Baptist who encouraged them to begin following Jesus instead.
  • Synagogues began while the Jews were in exile. They were local places where Jews gathered to study the scriptures and worship God. They did not replace the Temple, but served as a more convenient option for daily worship.
