Feeding Frenzy

Scripture: Matthew 14:15-21, Mark 6:35-44, Luke 9:12-17, John 6:5-14

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God cares about our needs.
  • Students will learn nothing is impossible for God if it is in His will.
  • Students will learn God can take what we give Him and do amazing things with it.
  • Students will learn about stewardship and needs vs. wants.
  • Students will participate in a service project that supports food donation.

Guiding Question: How can we provide for the hungry?

Materials: Coupons, bags for donated food, paper grocery bags

Procedure: Review the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 from the scriptures above. Explain how difficult it can be to feed a lot of people when budgets are tight. Discuss that even when things are difficult or money seems tight to get food, nothing is impossible for God and He will always provide. Tell the students about how homeless shelters, food banks, and churches often provided food for those in need. Explain that sometimes this can be difficult as food can get expensive.

Introduce the service project. Explain that coupons are great for making food cheaper and easier to buy, especially for places such as homeless shelters, food banks, and churches who may need to buy a large amount of food. Ask the students to collect coupon inserts from the mail or print coupons from the internet over a certain amount of time (your choice). Tell the students they can also bring in food to donate as well that will be packed in paper grocery bags. At the end of the selected time frame, the coupons and donated food will be taken to a homeless shelter, food bank, or distributed by the church.

Additional Questions: How can students serve others are hungry?
Supplemental Activity: Have the students find a food bank or soup kitchen they would like to volunteer at. Set up a time for the students to volunteer and also bring donations if they are able.
