Noah Reader’s Theater

Noah Reader's Theater – Teach One Reach OneScripture: Genesis 5-9

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Noah
  • Students will learn/review the four basic types of sentences – declarative, command, interrogative and exclamatory
  • Students will write and perform skits using all four of the types of sentences

Guiding Question: What are the four basic types of sentences?

Materials: costumes and props (optional), four index cards for each student

Procedure: Review the story of Noah. Teach students the four basic types of sentences – declarative, command, interrogative (question) and exclamatory. Review the story of Noah again choosing specific dialogue or implied dialogue. Ask students to identify which type of sentence is represented by the dialogue. Divide students into small groups. Each group needs to write and perform one or more sciences from the life of Noah. Each performance should have at least one example of each type of sentence. Allow students to perform the skits for the rest of the class. The class should write the words declarative, command, interrogative and exclamatory – one word per index card. As the skits are being performed have students hold up one of their index cards with the type of sentence being spoken written on the card.

Additional Question: What clues can the various types of sentences give us as to the theme of a work of literature or play?

Supplemental Activity: Have students identify poems or other short works of writing where the theme of the piece is reflected by the types of sentences used. (Ex. A pice with a lot of exclamatory sentences might have a theme of excitement or awe.)
