Loving Everyone

Scripture: Luke 19:1-10

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn there is no sin impossible for God to forgive if we repent.
  • Students will learn God wants us to repent of all of our sins as quickly and as honestly as possible.
  • Students will learn even though we are forgiven of our sins, we need to do whatever we can to make things right with the people we hurt with our sins.
  • Students will participate in a service project where they provide for Little People of America and learn about empathy.

Guiding Question: How does empathy and service make others feel that God loves them and values them?

Materials: The materials will vary depending on the needs from Little People of America.

Procedure: Review the story of Zacchaeus from the scriptures above. Explain to the students that God wants to forgive us for our sins and still loves us when we sin so it is important to always repent and ask God for forgiveness. If our sin has caused us to hurt somebody else, then we need to make things right with those that we hurt. By apologizing, we also have an opportunity to share God with them. Tell the students that while we do not know Zacchaeus’ height, he may have been a little person. Explain who little people are and how sometimes people are not as empathetic to them as they could be.

Have a guest speaker from Little People of America come to speak to the students about what life is like as a little person and how the students can show little people empathy. (Make contact with organization prior to activity. Have someone from the organization provide this information to you in an email or Skype if a guest speaker is unable to attend.) If the Little People of America organization has a need that needs to be met, have the students work on providing the service after the speaker is done.

Additional Questions: How can students show empathy to those with disabilities?

Supplemental Activity: Contact local groups or ministries that serve those with disabilities. Have a volunteer meet with or Skype the students to explain the life of those who are disabled and how they can show empathy to them.
