Scripture: Genesis 13-14, 18-19
Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn Abram’s nephew Lot was traveling with him.
- Students will learn Lot and Abram had too many animals to stay together.
- Students will learn Abram let Lot choose where he wanted to live. Lot chose an area near Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Students will learn the people living in Sodom and Gomorrah were very evil.
- Students will learn Lot had problems because he chose to live near evil people.
- Students will learn we must choose friends carefully.
- Students will learn how to share in a fair and godly way.
Guiding Question: Why does God place an emphasis on making good choices in our life?
Materials: Group of similar items (Example: toys, art supplies), paper, pencils
Procedure: Review the story of Abraham and Lot. Remind students that Lot had a choice where to live. He chose to live close to people who were doing sinful acts so he was influenced to be the same way. Explain that we have many choices we must make every day about who we are friends with, what we watch, what to do in our free time, how to treat others, etc. God wants us to choose friends who are godly and make decisions based off of what we know if the right thing to do so that we do not fall to the temptation of sin.
Introduce the activity. Divide students up in pairs. Give them a number of random objects to divide. Ex. toys, art supplies, food items. Have students use the items to try and create some rules for godly choosing when having to divide or share items. Have students compare their lists and develop a class list which they can then use.
Additional Questions: How can students determine fair or unfair situations?
Supplemental Activity: Create several scenarios with that are fair and unfair. Divide the students into two teams. Read each situation and the team has to decide whether it is a fair or unfair situation. The first to team raise their hand and answer correctly gets a point. If the situation is unfair, both teams need to come up with a fair, godly solution that they will both share before moving on to the next scenario.
