Scripture: Exodus 13-16
Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn God will provide what we need.
- Students will learn God does not always give us what we want.
- Students will learn God wants us to appreciate the gifts He has given us.
- Students will learn about and create emergency kits.
Guiding Question: How does God provide for us?
Materials: Emergency kit items – based on what emergency you choose
Procedure: Review the story of the Israelites escaping Egypt focusing on how God provided for their needs. Explain that to live you need food/water, shelter/safety and love. God provided for the Israelites and he provides for us too. God will always provide for our needs but we still have to do our part to take care of ourselves and have a plan for how to provide for ourselves in difficult times. God wants us to be smart and plan ahead so that we can help others and ourselves.
Introduce the activity. Explain to students that they are going to create emergency kits. These are kits that can prepare you with basic needs that you will have during an emergency. Have students share what they think would go in an emergency kit and support answers as needed. (Have students prepare a kit for a common emergency in your area: tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfire, etc). Have the students create a master list and take home to build kits or build kits in class with donated items.
Additional Questions: How can students prepare for an emergency?
Supplemental Activity: Have students create an action plan for a common emergency in your area. For example, an action plan for a hurricane may be: where the evacuation route is and how to get there, local hurricane shelters, what to bring, phone numbers to have, etc.
