Organizing Words with the Alphabet

Scripture: Genesis 31-33

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Jacob leaving and reuniting with Esau, focusing especially on how Jacob organized his family and gifts to encounter Esau.
  • Students will learn we can organize words by putting them in alphabetical order.
  • Students will learn/review how to put words in alphabetical order.
  • Students will participate in an activity to practice putting words in alphabetical order

Guiding Question: How can we organize words?

Materials: Multiple sets of words on index cards, each card should have one word on it. There should be a set for every 1-3 students. (sets of words can vary to provide additional practice)

Procedure: Review the story of Jacob leaving and reuniting with Esau focusing especially on Jacob organizing his family and gifts to encounter Esau. Explain that just like Jacob needed to organize his family and gifts, sometimes we need to organize words. Tell students many times we organize words by putting them in alphabetical order.

Teach and or review the concept of alphabetical order. Give every 1-3 students a set of cards to put in alphabetical order. To strengthen the tie to the bible story consider having a set of cards with words from the story (cows, donkeys, sheep, goats, servants, ewes, rams, camels, bulls, messengers, Jacobs, Rachel, Leah, Bilhah, Zilpah, Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulan, Dinah and Joseph).

Additional Questions:

  • How can we organize words if they all have the same first two letters?

Supplemental Activity: Have students repeat the activity but this time all the words should be the same first two or three letters. Choosing words from a page or two of the dictionary and writing each word on a separate card is the easiest way to generate a set of cards.
