Caring For The Kids

Scripture: Genesis 29-30

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn we can trust in God’s promises to us in the Bible
  • Students will learn God’s plans and timing are perfect
  • Students will learn God expects us to obey Him, follow His plans and wait for His timing
  • Students will learn God’s plans will ultimately succeed even if someone tries to ruin them.
  • Students will create hygiene packs for foster families.

Guiding Question: How can we follow God’s call to obey his commands and serve others?

Materials: Clear cellophane bags, ribbon, bag decorations, fun soaps, pretty washcloths, comb, brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, etc.

Procedure: Review the story of Jacob Starts a Family from the scripture above. Remind students about the importance of obeying God and what He has called us to do. Explain that part of what God expects is for us to serve and love others. This will glorify God and allows others to see God’s heart for them.

Introduce the service project. Explain that Jacob had lots of kids and he was wealthy enough to take care of all of his children. Tell students that some parents don’t take good care of their children and the government puts them into foster homes until their parents are able to take care of them. Explain to students that sometimes foster children have to go to a foster home without the things they need. The foster family may not have time to go buy extra things before the foster child arrives. Have students make hygiene packs to give foster families. Encourage students to make the bags attractive and cheerful. The bags can be donated to a local foster care agency. This can be something you do or take the students with you to do.

Additional Questions: How can students serve the local community?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students put on a “hygiene drive” in your congregation. Students can encourage church members to bring in new or unused hygiene products that will be donated to a local foster agency, children’s hospital, etc.
