Guiding Question: How does serving God happen during a worship service?
Materials: Paper, pencil, additional writing/drawing utensils
Procedure: Review the story of Jesus at the Temple as a boy. Explain that Jesus knew how important it was to have a relationship with God at a young age and how important it was to serve Him. Explain that Jesus knew in order to service God, it was important to worship Him and become familiar with the Bible. Ask students how God can be worshipped and why it is important to be in a close relationship with Him. Remind students that as they grow closer to God, they will know which ways God wants them to serve Him and worship Him during their everyday lives.
Introduce the activity. Tell students that there are often big words used during worship service that we may not always know or understand. Explain that the students are going to create their own worship service incorporating language that is used during church service. Introduce and explain the following vocabulary: congregation, worship, invitation, communion, offering, scripture, prayer. (You may add vocabulary if you would like to). Have the students work in partners or groups to create an outline of a church worship service and describe what would happen during each part of the service.
Additional Questions: How can students experience a worship service?
Supplemental Activity: Have the students create a worship service and put on a worship service in their class. Explain how students are worshipping God throughout the service as it goes on.
