Scripture: Jonah
Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn God expects us to obey Him.
- Students will learn God expects us to warn people of the consequences of disobeying Him.
- Students will learn God wants us to be happy when people turn away from their sin, even if we don’t like them.
- Students will learn how to create shade with different resources.
Guiding Question: How can we use shade to stay cool on a hot day?
Materials: Fabrics of different colors and thickness, umbrella, aluminum foil, cardboard
Procedure: Review the story of Jonah from the scriptures above. Emphasize the importance of obeying God to show honor and love to God while also avoiding negative consequences. Explain that God desires the best for us and wants us to always obey Him even when we do not understand His plan. God wants us to live the best life and be joyful in following Him. As Christians, we should love others and also warn them of the type of consequences they may have for disobeying God. By helping others and warning them, we can help them turn away from their sin and turn toward God.
Introduce the activity. Have the students share different ways they can find or use shade on a hot and sunny day. After sharing, tell the students they are going to experiment with making different kinds of shade. Have the students experiment with different materials to create shade and then use a thermometer to see which materials create the coolest shade.
Additional Questions: How can students compare different surface temperatures?
Supplemental Activity: Have students compare temperatures and shaded and non-shaded surfaces with a digital thermometer.
